Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?
Finding the right fit in a therapist is super important. Shop around, and reach out to multiple providers to ensure you feel comfortable with your chosen provider. Prior to scheduling your first session with me, we would have a 15 minute phone call free of charge for me to answer all of your questions and for me to share more about my philosophy of therapy with you.
What happens after our initial call?
After our initial call I want to encourage you to take all the time you need to make a decision. If you decide to schedule your first session with me, you will complete some intake paperwork online, and we will then schedule your appointment.
What can I expect in my first session?
Our first session is a chance for us to get to know one another, and identify your goals for therapy. We will make a plan about how we can work together in a way that feels supportive and effective for you to reach your desired goals.
Services & Approach
Who do you work with?
I work with adults and couples. I have specialized training in perinatal mental health, substance use and dual diagnosis, severe depression and anxiety, aging-related concerns, and eating disorders.
What is your approach to therapy?
I am an active therapist. I work collaboratively with you to understand what’s going on beneath the surface and help you find meaningful, practical solutions. My approach primarily draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with elements of other clinical approaches when appropriate.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
At this time, I offer telehealth sessions only.
How does telehealth work?
Sessions are held through a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform called Doxy.me. You’ll receive a link each session, on the day of your appointment — no downloads or special setup required. All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.
Fees & Payment
What are your fees?
Individual therapy sessions (50 minutes): $175
Couples therapy sessions (50 minutes): $200
Clinical Supervision (60 minutes): $125
Do you accept insurance?
I unfortunately do not accept insurance at this time and am considered an out-of-network provider. With that being said, I am happy to provide monthly superbills for protentional reimbursement through your insurance company.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt of services that you can submit to your insurance provider for possible reimbursement. I can provide this upon request.
Will my insurance reimburse me?
Reimbursement depends on your specific insurance plan. I recommend contacting your provider and asking about out-of-network mental health benefits, including reimbursement rates and deductibles.
Scheduling & Policies
How long are sessions?
All therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length.
How often will we meet?
Most clients begin with weekly sessions, though frequency will be discussed at your first session and agreed upon based on your needs and goals.
What is your availability?
I offer morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend appointments to accommodate a variety of schedules.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. Late cancellations or missed sessions are subject to the full session fee.
Practical Questions
Where are you located?
I provide telehealth services only and work with clients who are located only in the state of California.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Therapy is confidential, with a few legal exceptions (such as risk of harm to yourself or others, or as required by law). I will review these limits with you in our first session.
Common Concerns
What if I’ve never been to therapy before?
Welcome! That is totally okay. Many people start therapy without knowing what to expect. My role is to guide you through the process at a pace that feels comfortable and supportive for you.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
You don’t need to have it all figured out. We’ll work together to explore what’s coming up for you and identify what feels most important to focus on.
How long does therapy take?
The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and circumstances. This is something we will discuss both on our initial phone call and in your first session.
If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out to me via phone or text at 858.413.7746 or email at shelby.lmft@gmail.com.
I’m happy to help you determine whether this is the right next step for you.
